History

The ancient Babylonians are believed to have used sesame seeds to promote youth and beauty. Most varieties are wild and native to sub-Saharan Africa. Sesame seeds have since been naturalized in tropical areas worldwide and today is primarily grown in India. Sesame seeds are largely known for their extremely high oil content and in fact are the oldest oilseed crop known to man; believed to have been domesticated over 5000 years ago. The common phrase “open sesame,” known to be used for the first time in 1700s in Arabian Nights, as the magic words to open a sealed cave, is believed to be a reference to the sesame plant’s seedpods that burst open upon reaching maturity.
